If you’re tired of preparing meals by your lonesome self in the kitchen while the rest of the family are socialising in the adjoining room, then put food prepping at the heat of your new open-plan kitchen. Practical tasks can become easier too – a dining table placed closer to the kitchen means shorter carrying distance for plates and food, perfect if you have small kids at home.
Wooden worktops are also greatly encouraged for country kitchens, but do keep in mind that wood always requires a little more maintenance that other materials. Even the tiniest of spill needs to be cleaned immediately, not to mention regular oiling to keep those wooden surfaces looking fresh and new. A quick sand and polish is ideal for removing everyday scratches and dents.
How about changing the flooring, choosing hardwearing (and easy-to-clean) tiles for the kitchen, which flow elegantly into the lounge’s wooden floor? Alternatively, opt for the same flooring throughout, then add definition with different rugs. Other ways include varying the ceiling- and floor height between the different zones, or placing a furniture/décor piece like an open bookcase in-between the spaces.
With needs accounted for, the more specialist kitchen installations can be mapped out and chief amongst them is the plumbing. In any kitchen renovation project, the position of the sink and electrical appliances needs to be given serious thought, as there is a rule of thumb that states how far apart they should all be. In terms of plumbing, it is always a nice idea to locate a sink in front of a window, where at all possible, as that allows for a pleasant view while carrying out chores and means that external drains can be easily accessed as well. Of course, if a kitchen island design is going to include the main sink, plumbing will be a little more of an obstacle, but any professional will be able to navigate the project simply.
